SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team recorded its first Mountain West victory of the season Thursday night, with a 3-1 win against the San Diego State Aztecs at Aztec Court at Peterson Gym. The Rebels, who claimed the contest behind set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 20-25, 25-23, were paced by double-doubles from
Shelby Capllonch and
Mariena Hayden as well as double-digit kill efforts from
Kate Brennan and
Thea Sweder.
With the win, the Scarlet & Gray improved to 5-9 overall, while the Aztecs saw their record drop to 8-6. Both teams sit 1-2 through three matches of conference play following Thursday's result.
SDSU outhit UNLV by 33 points (.283 to .250); however, UNLV recorded 13 more kills (63-50) in 28 more attack attempts (148-120). The Rebels, who committed a total of 26 errors in the match – 10 more than the Aztecs, hit .405 and .368 in the first two frames of play, but mustered .079 and .143 displays in the third and fourth, respectively. SDSU, on the other hand, hit .300 or better in the first three sets and only had a total of eight errors in that same stretch; however, its attackers produced a .083 with eight errors in the fourth and final stanza.
Hayden combined a match-high 16 kills with a team-high 13 digs for her fourth consecutive double-double, while Capllonch notched her ninth of the year off a pairing of 12 kills with 10 digs. Besides the 28 kills and 23 digs produced by the outside-hitting duo, they also had five of the team's eight aces.
Brennan and Sweder added 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while
Macy Smith added nine of her own, with 29 assists coming from
Antonette Rolda and 23 more from
Lauryn Burt.
REBEL NOTES:
- UNLV has won seven of the last 10, including four of the last five, against San Diego State, which leads the all-time series 27-22.
- The match featured a total of 22 ties and only three lead changes, with all three of the latter taking place in the second set.
- Hayden upped her season total for aces to 12 and, subsequently, her career tally to 169. She needs only seven more to tie San Diego State's Robyn Gregg (2000-03) for first in the Mountain West record book with 176 apiece.
