LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Former record-setting receiver Devante Davis will serve as honorary captain and represent his decade's players during Saturday's 2010s Day as part of the athletic department's ongoing Sam Boyd Stadium Farewell celebration.
The Rebels host Hawai'i at 1 p.m. in the annual Ninth Island Showdown sponsored by the California Hotel on what will also be Homecoming for the campus. The first 500 fans can receive a 2010s-inspired T-shirt.
UNLV Athletics announced a celebration of the final season of football at Sam Boyd Stadium that includes special features, giveaways and fans' favorite memories throughout the historic season. The Sam Boyd Stadium Farewell campaign, which features a unique logo and uses the hashtag #SBSFarewell, was launched to help Rebel fans unite around the 49th and final season of their off-campus home that opened in 1971. The department is celebrating the stadium's history before UNLV football moves to the state-of-the-art, $2 billion Las Vegas Stadium currently under construction closer to campus.
As part of #SBSFarewell, a guest former Rebel great represents all the players from their respective decade while serving as honorary captain during the pregame coin toss.
Just the fourth Rebel invited to play in the prestigious Senior Bowl, Davis ranks third in school history with 2,785 receiving yards and third with 11 100-yard games along with fifth in catches with 186. The only Rebel in history to catch three touchdowns in a game three times in a career, the Texas native shattered the program record for receiving touchdowns in a season with 14 as a junior. He led UNLV to its first bowl appearance in 13 years at the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl where he set the Rebel bowl record with 10 receptions at the famed Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Davis' 2,144 combined yards in 2012-13 made him the first player in school history to go over 2,000 yards through the air in a two-season span.
