LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team completed the season sweep of the UNR Wolf Pack and upped its win streak to four straight, in the process, over its Silver State Series rival with Thursday's 3-1 decision (26-24, 24-26, 25-19, 25-21) at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels and Wolf Pack extended the first and second sets past the 25-point threshold; however, the hosts claimed the first point in both the third and fourth and never relinquished the leads.
With the win, UNLV has now been victorious in three straight and 12 of its last 13 to up its overall record to 16-10 and 12-3 in the Mountain West. The Wolf Pack, which has lost seven of its last 10, sits 17-10 on the year and 7-8 in conference play.
The Rebels outhit the Wolf Pack by 63 points (.183 to .120) with help from 13 more kills (56-43) and only two more errors (28-26) in 11 more attack attempts (153-142). UNLV hit .179 or better in all three sets it won, including a .312 effort in the third, but was only able to muster a .053 in the second frame. UNR, on the other hand, was held within a range of .094 (third set) and .135 (second and fourth). Besides the hitting numbers, UNLV also held advantages in assists (52-41), aces (8-1), digs (69-60) and total team blocks (9.0-6.0).
Mariena Hayden paced the Rebels with her 14th double-double of the year off a pairing of a match-high 17 kills and 12 digs. The quartet of
Alison French (10 kills),
Kate Brennan (nine),
Thea Sweder (seven) and
Macy Smith (seven) combined for 33 kills off .338 hitting. Brennan led the foursome with a .421 hitting efficiency with only one error in 19 swings.
SILVER STATE SERIES: With the Rebels sweep of the Wolf Pack in volleyball this season, UNLV will receive the three points associated with the sport towards the Silver State Series standings. To date, the Scarlet & Gray leads the all-encompassing academic and athletic competition, which is sponsored by IBEW Local 401 and Nevada Donor Network, 6-3 with women's soccer (UNLV) and cross country (UNR) already decided.
REBEL NOTES:
- The match featured a total of 17 ties and six lead changes, with the majority of both occurring over the first and second sets with 15 of the former and all six of the latter. The third and fourth only had one tie in each stanza.
- In addition to winning four straight in the series, UNLV has claimed five of the last six and 18 of the last 21 meetings against UNR, while its lead in the head-to-head series has moved to 15 matches (25-10).
- UNLV is 8-5 in four-set matches this season, having won six of the last seven that has ended with a 3-1 score.
- Hayden had two aces in the match to bump her career tally to 212; thus, increasing her UNLV and Mountain West record number with each subsequent ace.
- Hayden's 17 kills give her 1,201 for her career, making her only the fourth Rebel in program history to surpass the 1,200 mark.
- Hayden's 12 digs give her 962 for her career and moved into seventh place in the program's career record book, surpassing Sekola Falemaka's 951 amassed from 2010-13. Hayden needs 19 more to tie Rebel assistant coach
Melody Nua's 981 that were recorded from 2005-08.
- Hayden's 51 attack attempts give her 3,240 for her career and moved her within 20 of tying Daryn Glenn's 3,260 (2011-14) for fourth in the program's career record book.

Lauryn Burt moved into a tie for 10th with Sheila Nicks, who had 37 in 1984, in UNLV's single-season record book for aces after recording four against UNR.
UP NEXT: UNLV returns to the Cox Pavilion one last time during the regular season Saturday to face the San Jose State Spartans. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 pm. The match is being billed as "Senior Day," as the Rebels will recognize senior setter
