LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team suffered its first loss in over a month with its 3-1 setback to the San Diego State Aztecs at the Cox Pavilion Saturday. The Rebels' nine-match win streak did not end without a fight, as the hosts extended all three sets won by the Aztecs past the 25-point threshold. SDSU claimed the four-set contest behind set scores of 28-26, 27-25, 20-25, 27-25.
With Saturday's outcome, UNLV's record sits at 13-10 overall and 9-3 in the Mountain West, while SDSU improved to 12-11 and 5-7, respectively.
The Scarlet & Gray outhit the visitors from Southern California by 11 points with help from five fewer errors (29-34) in eight more attack attempts (169-161); however, the former had two fewer kills (56-58). Neither squad hit especially well through the first three frames of play, as UNLV hit between .077 (first) and .180 (second), and SDSU was held within a range of .057 (third) and .160 (second). The fourth was a different story for each side, with SDSU topping out at .323 (15-5-31) to UNLV's .275 (17-6-40).
UNLV was paced by double-doubles from
Mariena Hayden and
Shelby Capllonch, with the former combining a match-high 17 kills with 12 digs to the latter's 15 kills and a team-high 13 digs. Additionally, Hayden added two aces and one assist, while Capllonch chipped in four total blocks (three solo) and two assists.
The Rebels also got seven kills from
Erin Davis and six apiece from
Kate Brennan and
Macy Smith, with
Antonette Rolda (28 assists) and
Lauryn Burt (20) combining for 48 assists.
REBEL NOTES:
- The match featured a total of 42 ties and 16 lead changes. All three of SDSU's set wins consisted of double-digit ties, while UNLV's third-set victory only had five. There were seven lead changes alone in the first, but only three in the second, four in the three and two in the fourth.
- SDSU was faced with multiple set-point opportunities in first and fourth, with three in the former and two in the latter, while UNLV was unsuccessful in its second-set opportunity. The Rebels only needed one try to close out the third.
- Saturday's loss was the first for UNLV since it was on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to then-No. 17 Colorado State on Sept. 28, which was also the last time the Rebels were defeated at the Cox Pavilion.
- UNLV had won three straight over SDSU until Saturday's result, which extended the latter's overall lead in the all-time head-to-head series to six at 28-22.
- UNLV is 6-5 in four-set matches this season, having won five straight prior to Saturday's result.
- Hayden had two aces in the match to bump her career tally to 206; thus, increasing her UNLV and Mountain West record number with each subsequent ace.
- Hayden's 12 digs helped her move into eighth place in the program's career record book with 929, surpassing Brittani Lumsden's 922 amassed from 2004-07.
UP NEXT: UNLV will hit the road next week for a pair of Mountain West matches at Boise State and Utah State. The Rebels will open the week Thursday (7:00 pm MT/6:00 pm PT) against the Broncos in Boise, Idaho and conclude it Saturday afternoon (1:00 pm MT/12:00 pm PT) in Logan, Utah against the Aggies Saturday.
