COLLEGE STATION, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) – Texas A&M remained undefeated with a 6-1 victory over the visiting UNLV women's tennis team Friday at George Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Rebels fell to 1-2 while the Aggies of the SEC improved to 6-0 and 6-3 all-time in the series.
Facing each other for the first time since 2010, the teams turned in a spirited doubles session, which at one point saw all three courts tied at 4. Texas A&M, however, pulled away on both courts one and three to secure the team point.
Moving to singles top UNLV player
Aiwen Zhu was quickly downed by Katya Townsend at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1. The hosts then won straight-setters on courts five and six to clinch the victory while two matches would go the distance.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Izumi Asano and doubles teammate
Connie Li were tied at 6 when their match was halted and then Asano posted her team's only point with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Renee McBryde at the third position in singles.
QUOTABLE: "Texas A&M has a top 20 team this year. We had our chances in doubles and saw a lot of close sets in singles."
-UNLV Head Coach Kevin Cory
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will tangle with Lamar Saturday morning in a neutral-site match at Texas A&M.
