Rebels Record Five Top-Eight Finishes Friday

UNLV track & field’s Elisa Rovere posts program’s fifth-best indoor 600m performance at New Mexico Collegiate Classic.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV track & field opened their stay in the Duke City and the New Mexico Collegiate Classic with five top-eight finishes in a total of five events. The Rebels' best showing on day one of the meet came in the 600m by Elisa Rovere who finished fourth overall with a time of 1:34.03 and, subsequently, moved into fifth place in the program's all-time indoor performance list for the event.
 
The Scarlet & Gray's Amari Prude took fifth in the unseeded 400m (57.76), while Jasmyne Graham and Tenia Landrum were sixth (18-4.25/5.59m) and eighth (18-0.50/5.50m) in the long jump, respectively. Jartierra Grissom was also eighth in the high jump (5-3.25/1.61m).
 
In a meet featuring four nationally ranked squads, including No. 8 New Mexico and No. 11 LSU, the Rebels got ninth-place finishes from Najia Hudspeth with a personal-best time of 24.07 in the 200m and Kara Smith in the 600m (1:36.11). Jonon Young was 11th in the long jump with a distance of 17-8.25 (5.39m).
 
UNLV returns to the Albuquerque Convention Center Saturday for five track and two field events. The Rebels will have track participants in the mile, 800m and 4x400m relay as well as qualifying and preliminary rounds of the 60m and 60m hurdles. The day starts with the shot put at 10:00 am MT (9:00 am PT) with the 4x400m relay wrapping up action at 2:30 pm MT (1:30 pm PT).
 
Leading UNLV's contingent on day two will be Destiny Smith-Barnett who sits first overall in the Mountain West, third in the NCAA and fifth in the world in the 60m with a time of 7.17. Smith-Barnett is one of five Rebels that ranks 13th or better in the conference standings, as teammate Kaysha Love is close behind in fourth at 7.40.
 
Additionally, the Rebels have four student-athletes that rank in the top seven of the 60m hurdles in the MW. Jada Hicks sits first overall with a time of 8.34, while Graham (third/8.44), Taylor Pegram (fourth/8.46) and Jaela Williams (seventh/8.61) round out the quartet.
 
ALL-COMERS MEET: The UNLV track & field program will host its second All-Comers Meets at Myron Partridge Stadium & Sheila Tarr-Smith Field on Feb. 16. Participants (open to the public) can enter the meet for $5 for one event or $10 for two or more. Spectators are $5. Action begins at 9:30 am with the shot put and concludes at 12:50 pm with the 4x400m relay.
