Rebels Shut Out Portland State For Fourth Straight Win

UNLV opens the weekend at the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, California, with a 9-0 win in six innings over PSU

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team won its fourth straight game with a 9-0 six-inning victory over Portland State on day one of the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, California. Win the win, UNLV moves to 10-1 on the season, matching the best start in program history by the 1995 squad. It was also the fourth run-rule victory of the year.

Freshman Jenny Bressler was brilliant in her sixth start, pitching five scoreless frames to pick up her sixth win of the season.

As they have all season, juniors Reina Bondi and Lauren Tycksen sparked the offense as the duo combined to go 4-for-7 with five runs scored at the top of the lineup. Twice before the Rebels pulled away, Bondi got on base with singles and Tycksen brought her home each time with a pair of RBIs. The two also combined for four stolen bases, including three by Tycksen.

UNLV scored more than seven runs for the seventh time this season and it was a team effort Friday as seven different players registered hits and seven different players recorded RBIs. The Rebels are now outscoring its opponents 77-24.

THE TURNING POINT: With the Rebels holding just a one-run lead in the top of the fourth, freshman Denise Armendariz got on base with a two-out single to right center. Next up was sophomore shortstop Samantha Diaz, who launched her first home run of the season to give the Rebels some breathing room with the two-run shot. Rebels went on to add two more insurance runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the game away.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Bressler has impressed early in her collegiate career as she gave up just two hits in five innings and has yet to lose this season at 6-0. She added three strikeouts and just two walks on the day.

STAT OF THE GAME: The first four runs of the game for the Rebels came with two outs in the inning.

UP NEXT: UNLV will have a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. against Maryland followed by a second matchup against Portland State at 11:30 a.m. in Riverside, California.
