Trio Of Former Rebels Ready To Make Debut In New League

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Three former UNLV standouts are scheduled to make their debuts this weekend in the new Alliance of American Football.

The inaugural season of the eight-team league kicks off Saturday and runs through April 14. The championship game will be held at UNLV's own Sam Boyd Stadium April 27.

The Rebel alums making final AAF rosters were linebackers (and brothers) John Lotulelei and Tau Lotulelei along with offensive lineman Brett Boyko.

John Lotulelei (lettered at UNLV in 2011-12) and Boyko (2011-14) are both on the San Diego Fleet franchise coached by Mike Martz. The Fleet's opener is Saturday at 5 p.m. PT at the Alamodome vs. the San Antonio Commanders.

The older Lotulelei was a First Team All-Mountain West selection in 2012 after posting 120 total tackles. He has spent five years in the NFL, appearing in 18 total games while suiting up on the active roster and practice squads for the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.

Boyko, a native of Canada, was a four-year starter at tackle who was twice named Second Team All-MW as a Rebel. He spent two years on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Chargers in San Diego and then Los Angeles. He appeared in one game for the team in 2017.

Tau Lotulelei (2013-16), meanwhile, is a member of the Atlanta Legends coached by Kevin Coyle. The Legends also start Saturday at 5 p.m. PT at the Orlando Apollos. The younger Lotulelei was named first team All-Mountain West as a senior in 2016 and previously spent time in the Canadian Football League.
