Rebels Finish Strong On Day Two In The Duke City

UNLV track & field’s Jonon Young moves up in program’s all-time indoor performance list in the triple jump.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV track & field program recorded five top-eight finishes on the second and final day of New Mexico's Don Kirby Invitational, which was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Rebels were paced by Jonon Young's career-best performance in the triple jump as well as season-best showings from Jasmyne Graham in the 60m hurdles and their 4x400m relay foursome.
 
Young registered a measurement of 40-6.75 (12.36m) in the triple jump that not only claimed eighth-place in the event, but moved her from fourth to third in UNLV's all-time indoor performance list.
 
Graham finished fifth overall in the 60m finals with a time of 8.35, which was .01 seconds faster than the 8.36 that she posted in the preliminary portion of the event.
 
The quartet of Gizelle Reid, Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete, Amari Prude and Najia Hudspeth combined for a time of 3:41.98 to finish fifth in the 4x400m relay.
 
The meet featured 27 collegiate squads, including Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State as well as UNLV and host UNM. Additionally, four programs entered the weekend ranked nationally by the USTFCCCA, as UNM is eighth overall, while No. 6 Oregon, No. 17 Stanford and No. 30 UCLA rounded out the quartet.
 
NOTES:
-Hudspeth clocked personal-best times in the 60m in both the qualifying (7.63) and preliminary (7.62) rounds.
-Wilson-Perteete ran a personal-best time of 55.17 in the 400m; a race that she finished seventh overall.
-Mackenna Howard was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 50-10.75 (15.51m).
-Jaylen Walker notched a personal-best mark of 38-1.25 (11.61m) in the triple jump.
 
NEXT TIME OUT: The Scarlet & Gray will make its third straight trip to the Duke City and the Albuquerque Convention Center in two weeks for the Mountain West Indoor Championships. The Rebels will take next weekend off before reconvening on Feb. 21-23 to defend their 2018 MW indoor title.
 
ALL-COMERS MEET: The UNLV track & field program will host its second All-Comers Meets at Myron Partridge Stadium & Sheila Tarr-Smith Field on Feb. 16. Participants (open to the public) can enter the meet for $5 for one event or $10 for two or more. Spectators are $5. Action begins at 9:30 am with the shot put and concludes at 12:50 pm with the 4x400m relay.
