Rebels Notch Shutout Then Rally For Doubleheader Sweep Over Cal Baptist

UNLV blanks the Lancers 6-0 in game one, then comes from behind to take game two 6-4

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team returned to the win column with a doubleheader sweep over Cal Baptist (21-29) at Eller Media Stadium Friday as the Rebels hosted the Lancers on their conference bye week. UNLV dominated game one 6-0 for its 12th shutout of the season, but did need some comeback magic for a 6-4 win in game two.

The pair of victories helped the Rebels improve to 30-13 in 2019, marking a second straight 30-win season under second-year head coach Kristie Fox. The back-to-back 30 win campaigns are also the first in consecutive years since 2009 and 2010, while it is just the 15th 30-win year in the program's 35-year history.

After scoring 11 runs over three games in a series loss to San Jose State last weekend, the Rebels managed 12 on 20 hits over the two contests Friday. Nine different Rebels registered hits in the wins led by a 4-for-8 (.500) afternoon by leadoff hitter Lauren Tycksen.

Freshman Jenny Bressler picked up both victories, totaling 9.1 scoreless frames, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts. The righty started game one and went the distance for her sixth shutout then pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to help set up the Rebel comeback in the night cap.

GAME 1: UNLV 6 Cal Baptist 0

THE TURNING POINT:
The Rebels methodically built a 3-0 lead over the first three frames thanks to sacrifice flies from Denise Armendariz, Reina Bondi and Samantha Diaz. Leading 3-0 in the fifth, the Rebels were able to pull away after Armendariz doubled with one out and Diaz brought her home with a two-run shot to left field - her career-high fifth home run of 2019. UNLV added a third run in the inning on a Lauren Tycksen RBI single up the middle to score Myranda Bueno from second to make it 6-0, essentially ending the game.

STAT OF THE GAME: The three sacrifice flies were a single-game high for the Rebels this year and gave them 19 total on the year.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Bressler, who has had some ups and down over the last few weeks, returned to form Friday, limiting the Lancers to just two hits in the seven-inning shutout to go along with five strikeouts.

GAME 2: UNLV 6 Cal Baptist 4

THE TURNING POINT:
The Rebels found themselves down 1-0 after one inning and 3-0 after three and half, but never wavered. In the bottom half of the third, Bueno got the offense going with a two-out two-run single to right center. After CBU got one run back in the fifth for a 4-2 lead, UNLV again responded in the bottom half with a Bondi RBI triple to bring home Tycksen all the way from first for a 4-3 lead. The very next pitch, Justine Federe laid down a bunt and the speedy Bondi beat the throw home to tie it up at four. In the next frame, the Rebels loaded the bases with two outs and Bondi was up again. She sent the ball to left field for a single that was deep enough to score the go-ahead runs and what proved to be the game winner.

STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels' track record when the opponent scores first has not been particularly impressive in 2019 at just 5-10 when that occurs, but UNLV overcame that in game two for its sixth win when faced with that situation.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Bondi had hit a bit of a slump at the plate over the last few weeks, hitting .176 over the last nine games. The junior came through in a big way in the comeback, knocking the RBI triple and scoring the game-tying run then coming up with the game-winning hit to score a pair of runs in the sixth. For the game, she went 2-for-4 with three RBI with one run scored.

UP NEXT: UNLV will officially close out its non-conference regular season slate Saturday with the series finale at noon. Dogs are welcome on Bark in the Park day at Eller Media Stadium.
