Men's Tennis Drops Senior Day Dogfight With Fresno State

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team won doubles play but it was not enough to keep visiting Fresno State from pulling out a 4-3 victory to spoil Senior Day Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Competing on the hottest day of the year, the Rebels saw their four-match winning streak snapped to fall to 13-5 overall, 2-2 in the Mountain West and lost at home for just the second time in 14 outings. The Bulldogs improved to 13-9 overall and 3-1 in league play.

The Rebels bolted out to a 1-0 lead by quickly taking the first two completed doubles matches on courts one and two. In singles, only two of six matches went straight sets and Fresno State took both of them. The match was eventually tied at three and all eyes moved to the third position where Rebel sophomore Jordan Sauer and Mantas Bugailskis had traded 7-6 tiebreakers. However, the Bulldog senior took the final set and emerged with the clinching point, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3.

REBEL OF THE MATCH: Senior Olle Thestrup teamed with Sauer for a 6-2 win in doubles on court two and then won his final singles match at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, over Angus Bradshaw at the second spot in the lineup.

NET NOTES: The team honored its two seniors on court one before the match as four-year letterman Richard Solberg and former transfer Thestrup were recognized … Freshman Tom Ciszewski rallied to take his match on court six and improved his rookie record to 11-1 … Las Vegas product Clayton Alenik won his doubles match but then was absent from the singles lineup because of illness. The sophomore stands a team-best 12-1 in dual matches this season.

QUOTABLE: "Tough loss today but I was proud of the team's effort and fight throughout. We have to recover and get ready for a challenging road trip next weekend."
-UNLV Head Coach Owen Hambrook

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will travel to play New Mexico on Friday afternoon in its first Mountain West road action of the season.
