LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer didn't get the result it was looking for in its first game of 2019 as the Rebels fell 1-0 to CSUN at Peter Johann Memorial Field Thursday night. It was the first time in six seasons under head coach
Chris Shaw the Rebels had lost their opening game of the year.
TURNING POINT: After UNLV downed CSUN 3-1 last year on the Matador's home field, CSUN returned the favor at UNLV's home pitch in the rematch. The Matadors struck first, scoring late in the first half, and the Scarlet and Gray could not find the equalizer despite out-shooting the visitors 15-12.
STAT OF THE GAME: True freshman midfielder
Marcella Brooks, a Las Vegas native, made her first career start and led the team with four shots total in the game, while sophomore keeper
Emberly Sevilla collected four saves on the night.
UP NEXT: UNLV begins a three-weekend road stretch, starting with two games in California next weekend. First up is a match at Cal Baptist Friday, August 30 at 3:30 p.m. in Riverside, California, followed by a Sunday meeting with Cal State Bakersfield at 1 p.m. in Bakersfield. The following weekend, the Rebels will face their toughest test of their non-conference slate as they face Duke and North Carolina in the Duke Classic September 5 and 8, respectively. The road stretch wraps up with another tough game at Texas A&M on Sunday, September 15 in College Station.
REBEL NOTES:

* CSUN took a 5-3 lead in the all-time series
* UNLV lost a season opener for the first time since 2009, which was also the last time the Rebels were shut out in a season opener
