RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer opened it's five-game road stretch on a strong note, shutting out host Cal Baptist 2-0 in Riverside Friday afternoon thanks to a pair of first-half goals. The Rebels were able to bounce back from a season-opening loss last week - their first since 2009 - to pick up their first win in 2019.
UNLV evened its record at 1-1, while the defeat was the first for Cal Baptist, who moved to 2-1 overall.
TURNING POINT: After being shut out last week, the Rebels didn't wait long to find the back of the net for the first time this season. Sophomore defender
Taylor Clark found senior forward
McKenna Sullivan streaking to the goal and Sullivan turned and finished from the right side of the box to put UNLV up 1-0 in the 16th minute. Ten minutes later a foul in the box drawn by senior forward
Michaela Morris resulted in a penalty kick for fellow senior
Katie Ballou, who buried it for 2-0 lead.
STAT OF THE GAME: Sophomore keeper
Emberly Sevilla, who has started all 22 games of her collegiate career, tallied five saves in the game, including three huge stops in the second half when the Lancers were putting on late pressure to try and mount a comeback.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Sullivan came up with what proved to be the game winner early in the game and collected three total shots. The senior was constantly giving the CBU defense fits with her speed and strength up front.
QUOTABLE: "It was good to get the win on the road. The players were eager to get back on the field after last week's game and they performed well. It's still very early in the season, but we could already see an improvement from our first game to this one."
- Head coach Chris Shaw
UP NEXT: UNLV will wrap up the weekend at Cal State Bakersfield Sunday at 1 p.m. in Bakersfield. The Rebels beat CSUB 6-0 in Las Vegas last season and have never lost to the Roadrunners.
