Camp Rebel: Return Of Ronnie

Camp Rebel Day 2 saw the team return to the field for a two-hour session in helmets on a pleasant August Saturday morning. The Rebels will be right back at it Sunday morning for Day 3 and add shoulder pads to the mix for the first time (all of UNLV's camp practices are closed to the public).

The newest member of the coaching staff putting in work on Saturday was really not a new face at all.

After finishing two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for the Rebels, Ronnie Regula landed a full-time gig back East and in January was announced as a member of the staff at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. However, his time in the Keystone State was short-lived as Regula recently accepted head coach Tony Sanchez's offer to return to Las Vegas – this time as UNLV's tight ends coach. The job here opened when offensive coordinator Barney Cotton, who also handled the tight end position, was forced to move to Omaha, Nebraska, to await a heart transplant.

Regula said the quick turnaround was obviously unexpected.

"It's certainly different going back and forth across country," said the University of Miami graduate. "But everything that I learned here -- being on offense and defense (as a GA) -- gave me the opportunity at Lafayette College. And just being out there for the six months gave me even more tools as a coach. Coach Sanchez and the whole staff have a really good thing going, I knew that the program was on the right track when I left and to be able to come back for what I think is going to be a special season has got me fired up."

On the field, Regula oversees a group – led by junior Giovanni Fauolo Sr. (17 receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns) that looks to have a bigger impact in the offense in 2019.

"It's a young group," he said. "Gio has taken control of the room even though he's only a junior but (sophomore) Noah Bean (redshirt freshmen), Shelton Zeon and Tyler Yoder – they've all bought in. We just need to continue to learn the offense, continue to progress in the right direction. They're all excited. They're all eager. They all want to get better."

UNLV opens its season August 31 by hosting Southern Utah at 7 pm. Season tickets, which start as low as $99, are available now and as part of UNLV's Faithful Fan Pricing initiative, fans purchasing season tickets this year may purchase season tickets for the same per-game price in the new Las Vegas Stadium opening in 2020.

Season ticket mini-plans for UNLV football recently went on sale. This year's mini-plan allows fans to purchase tickets for the games vs. Boise State, San Diego State and Hawai'i for one low price that includes a meal combo and the commemorative giveaway T-shirt each week. Prices for the mini-plan are $99 for end-zone locations and $150 for sideline seats.
