SAN FRANCISCO (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV was forced to play the final 59 minutes of the contest down a man, and San Francisco took advantage to claim a 1-0 victory over the Rebels Sunday afternoon in men's soccer action, handing the Rebels their first shutout loss of the season.
Nick Williams was whistled for a pair of yellow cards in the first half, in the 26th and 31st minutes. That resulted in an automatic red card and left UNLV shorthanded in the road contest. The Rebels kept up the attack despite the setback, with several strong scoring chances near the end but could not find the back of the next, while USF scored after a scramble for the ball in the box in the 56th minute for the lone score of the game. The match marked the first time this season UNLV did not score in a game, while all four losses for the Rebels this season have been by just one goal each.
UNLV returns to action Thursday with just its second home game of the season, against seventh-ranked Saint Mary's at 5:30 pm at Johann Memorial Field. The game will be the first in the Johann Memorial Classic, and will be followed by Santa Clara and Utah Valley at 8 pm. All four teams will be in action again Sunday on the second day of the tournament. There will be a free tailgate party with food and drinks and music before the Thursday night game starting at 3:30 pm, open to all ticketed fans.
