Rebels Drop Second Straight Overtime Contest

Nico Clasen scores first career goal in the loss.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -  In a back and forth game, San Diego State (1-1) had the momentum last, scoring in the 97th minute to claim a 3-2 victory over the UNLV men's soccer team (0-2) Monday night in the Rebels' home opener.

UNLV was on the scoreboard first thanks to a header by Nick Williams off a corner kick by Nico Clasen in the 17th minute. SDSU countered with a pair of goals in the 59th and 75th minutes for a 2-1 advantage. The Rebels quickly answered back with a score from Clasen in the 78th minute to tie the game. The score by Clasen marked his first career goal in his two years as a Rebel.

SDSU, who held a 21-15 edge on shots, took the only four attempts of the overtime period, and cashed in on its fourth one when the ball was played up from the back to the front right before it was crossed to the middle. Hunter George made a move around the Rebel defense and slid a shot under goalkeeper Enrique Adame for the golden goal in the 97th minute.

The Rebels return to action Friday with a 5:30 pm (PT) kickoff at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
