Rebels Unable To Close Out Cowgirls In MW Opener

UNLV Volleyball gets double-doubles from Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch and Mariena Hayden in 3-2 loss at Wyoming Thursday.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking, five-set loss to the Wyoming Cowgirls in the Mountain West opener for both squads at the UniWyo Sports Complex Thursday. The Rebels (4-8 overall, 0-1 MW) pushed out to an early 2-0 lead; however, the host Cowgirls (6-6, 1-0) fought back to claim the contest by set scores of 22-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-8.
 
Wyoming outhit UNLV by 56 points (.280 to .224); primarily, due to its offense committing 10 fewer attack errors (17-27), while having five fewer kills (57-62) in 13 fewer attempts (143-156). The Cowgirls hit .242 or better in four of five sets; however, their best hitting display occurred in the first set – a frame they lost, 25-22. The Rebels, on the other hand, opened the affair with back-to-back .400-plus efforts - .419 in the first and .406 in the second, but was limited to .194 or lower averages the remainder of the match.
 
The Rebels got double-doubles from three of their own, as Mariena Hayden (13 kills/14 digs) and Shelby Capllonch (10 kills/13 digs) combined kills and digs for the feat, while Lauryn Burt (25 assists/11 digs) used a combination of assists and digs. Alison French also reached the double-digit mark in kills with 12 off a team-best .375 hitting.
 
UNLV held the edge in assists (58-55) and aces (6-1), but trailed in digs (56-57) and total team blocks (5.0 to 15.0).
 
REBEL NOTES:
- The match featured a total of 10 ties and no lead changes, with half of the ties occurring in the opening set of the match.
- Hayden moved solely into second place in the Mountain West record book for career aces with her first ace of the match. To date, the junior has 164 for her career, and trails San Diego State's Robyn Gregg (2000-03) and her 176 aces for first.
- Hayden's 13 kills helped her moved into eighth place in UNLV's career record book with 935.
- Following Thursday's match, UNLV holds a one-match edge in the all-time series with Wyoming, leading 25-24.
