Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Runnin' Rebels Come Up Just Short Against No. 4 San Diego State

Bryce Hamilton recorded the second double-double of his career with game highs of 29 points and 10 rebounds, but UNLV lost 71-67 Sunday afternoon at the Thomas & Mack Center.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Bryce Hamilton recorded the second double-double of his career with game highs of 29 points and 10 rebounds, but the UNLV men's basketball team came up just short against No. 4 San Diego State, 71-67, Sunday afternoon at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The sophomore guard was 10 of 17 from the field, including 3 of 6 on 3-pointers. He also shot 6 of 8 on free throws and had a game-high three steals for UNLV (11-11, 6-3). Sophomore guard Marvin Coleman added 11 points for the Runnin' Rebels.

The Aztecs (21-0, 10-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Malachi Flynn's 21 points.

THE TURNING POINT: UNLV trailed by just three points with 3:36 remaining (55-52), when SDSU scored five quick points to take an eight-point lead. The Runnin' Rebels could get no closer than five points the rest of the way until Hamilton made a 3-pointer as time expired.

QUOTABLE: "That is an elite San Diego State team. We knew we were going to have to play our absolute best to win today. I thought our fight and competitive spirit was there. There were a few key plays in certain moments that we didn't finish plays on the glass or get the stop that we needed. Had we done that it probably would have been a different story at the end of the game. I am proud of our guys for how they fought from start to finish, but for us to get over the hump against a really good team we are going to have to be very attentive to every detail and play mistake-free basketball. That wasn't the case out there today." - UNLV head coach T.J. Otzelberger

NOTES:
- The Thomas & Mack Center crowd of 12,287 was a season high for UNLV.
- The loss snapped a six-game home win streak for UNLV. It was just the third loss overall for the Runnin' Rebels in their last 10 games.
- It was UNLV's 16th defeat in its last 17 meetings with SDSU.
- There were five lead changes and four ties throughout the game.
- SDSU was the highest-ranked team to visit the Thomas & Mack Center since then-No. 3 Kansas during the 2016-17 season.
- UNLV senior guard Elijah Mitrou-Long returned after missing 12 straight games with a broken thumb.
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,092 straight games.

NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN' REBELS: UNLV has a bye this week before traveling to Colorado State for a game on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. PT. The game will be shown on ESPN3.
