Late-Inning Offense Lifts Rebels To Pair of 1-0 Shutouts

UNLV goes 2-0 on day one of the Frost Classic in Tennessee behind stellar pitching and timely hitting in two 1-0 shutouts

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV softball team (9-4) got back in the win column Friday with a pair of 1-0 victories over Miami (OH) and Saint Francis at UT Chattanooga's Frost Classic. The Rebels out-dueled the competition thanks to stellar starting performances by sophomore Jenny Bressler and Breana Burke and late timely hitting by the offense.

The impressive start to the season by the UNLV pitching staff of Bressler, Burke and Charlie Masterson continued Friday as the Rebels notched their fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. Bressler made the start against Miami and allowed just four hits in a complete-game performance for her fourth win. Burke followed that with six shutdown innings against St. Francis before giving way to Masterson to close out the seventh for the save.

Burke is now 3-0 on the season and has extended her scoreless inning streak to 21 innings.

As a staff, Friday's performances lowered the season ERA to a staggering 0.97.

The Rebel offense was limited to two runs and six hits over the two games, but took advantage of late opportunities in both contests, pushing the winning run across the plate on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly against the RedHawks and coming through on a sixth-inning RBI single by Justine Federe against Saint Francis.

Game 1 Recap (UNLV vs. Miami (OH)): After Miami (OH) came away with the 1-0 victory in Las Vegas a year ago, the Rebels returned the favor Friday. Bressler and Miami pitcher Courtney Vierstra battled it out in a strikeout fest with the two combining for 22 in the game. Bressler tallied 10 total, one off of her career high, in her second shutout this year. With the pitcher's duel continuing into the fifth inning, Lauryn Barker led off the frame with a double to center, then reached third on a passed ball. Junior Jaclyn Candelas delivered with a sacrifice fly to push Barker across home plate and that was all they would need for the win. Bressler allowed just six RedHawk runners to reach base and none made it past second base.

Game 2 Recap (UNLV vs. Saint Francis): In a second pitcher's duel of the day, Burke continued her brilliance in the circle, shutting down the Red Flash over six innings. The senior allowed just two hits with three strikeouts and hasn't allowed a run since the seventh inning against Oregon State on February 8. After managing just two hits over the first five innings, the Rebel offense got it going in the sixth. After Maddie Schmidt drew a leadoff walk, Tycksen reached on a fielder's choice then reached second on a Mia Trejo single. That brought up RBI-specialist Justine Federe, who did what she does best, sending a single to right field to score Tycksen from second. That was all they would get in the inning, but again was enough for the win. Masterson then entered in the seventh and turned in a 1-2-3 inning, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game, to notch her first save.

UP NEXT: The Frost Classic continues Saturday with the Rebels taking on St. Louis at 9 a.m. PT and tournament host UT Chattanooga at 1 p.m. PT.
