Runnin' Rebels Close Out Regular Season With 92-69 Win At San Jose State

UNLV victorious in a season-high fifth straight game, finishing with 12 Mountain West wins for first time in 12 years.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - Four Runnin' Rebels scored in double figures as the UNLV men's basketball team defeated San Jose State, 92-69, in its regular-season finale at The Event Center Saturday afternoon.

The win was UNLV's fifth straight and sixth in its last seven games. It was also the Runnin' Rebels' 12th Mountain West win, giving them their most conference victories in 12 years. The 2007-08 squad went 12-4 during conference play.

Senior guard Elijah Mitrou-Long scored a team-high 20 points for UNLV (17-14, 12-6) before leaving the game late with an injury. Junior forward Mbacke Diong recorded his fifth double-double of the year with a career-high tying 19 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Bryce Hamilton added 18 points, and junior guard Amauri Hardy contributed 17.

The Spartans (7-23, 3-15) were led by Seneca Knight's 20 points and eight rebounds.

STATS OF THE GAME: UNLV shot 57.1 percent (16 of 28) in the first half and made 11 3-pointers during the game, finishing one shy of its season high.

STRETCHING THE LEAD: UNLV led 44-35 at halftime and over about a 12 minutes stretch in the second half, doubled up SJSU 28-14 to take a 20-point lead with 7:30 to go.

20-POINT AVERAGE: With a scoring average of 20.9 ppg in conference play, Hamilton became the first Runnin' Rebel to score at least 20 points per game in MW play since the 2009-10 season (Tre'Von Willis, 20.3 ppg).

QUOTABLE: "We challenged our guys. That is a tough environment to play in because you have to generate your own energy. I am proud of our guys how they came out with a focus early in the game. In the second half, we were really able to separate because our defensive energy was good. To hold them under 40 percent from the field on their court speaks to the continued improvement of our defense and that led to our offensive transition." - UNLV head coach T.J. Otzelberger
