JACKLYN SCHEBERIES
UNLV WOMEN'S SWIMMING
EXPLORING MAJOR

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - It's been quite a spring and summer for rising sophomore Jacklyn Scheberies from the UNLV women's swimming and diving team. First, the freestyle specialist had to adjust, like the rest of her teammates and the country as well, to the current quarantine situation due to Covid-19 and all the changes that's lead to, including finishing the spring semester by remote learning and the challenges of finding ways to stay in swimming shape with so many facilities shut down at the start of the spring.

If that wasn't enough, Scheberies recently used her swimming skills in a true life-saving moment, as her and three friends helped save the life of a teenage cliff diver in California earlier this month.

UNLVRebels.com had a chance this week to check in the Castro Valley, California native about how she's been handling the time away from Las Vegas and her teammates and to follow up on her news-making save.

UNLVRebels.com: What's it been like with all the attention you and your friends have received after the news got out what happened?

Jacklyn: It has been very cool because we didn't know that it was going to be this big we thought I was going to be 15 minutes of fame but instead it was a whole week it was very cool.

UNLVRebels.com: How long have the four of you been friends?

Jacklyn: We have been friends ever since we were six, from growing up at school and we were all on my dad's swim team together

UNLVRebels.com: Have you heard and talked with him since the accident?

Jacklyn: This coming weekend he is coming down to the Bay Area and we are going to hang out with him and see how he's doing.

UNLVRebels.com: What was the name of your dad's swim team that you all met on?

Jacklyn: The Drowning Darryls, the name came from a joke between the coaches. And it just caught fire as people loved it and that became our image of the team, but when I was little I thought it was ploy to make the other teams think we are bad. We were undefeated for eight  consecutive years though.

UNLVRebels.com: How else have you been spending your time this summer during the quarantine?

Jacklyn: I've been able to start back with swimming this past month so that's been mostly what I've been doing. I've also spent time on  doing art projects ( I'm not very good though) and hanging out with my two sisters.

UNLVRebels.com: What have you been doing to stay and shape?

Jacklyn: I have been running with my mom and doing the 21 day fix workouts with my sisters. I am also swimming for old my club team, though the pool is 40 minutes away we're limited to what the team can rent.

UNLVRebels.com: What's been your biggest challenge during the quarantine and doing remote learning?

Jacklyn: I'm a hands-on learner and I need to be in class to understanding correctly so that was by far the biggest adjustment, but even with that I felt I did pretty good this past semester with my classes.

UNLVRebels.com: What are your plans for the rest of the summer before you come back to UNLV?

Jacklyn: My friends and I are planning on going on some trips and just hanging out and having fun, and I'm going to continue swimming where and when I can.

UNLVRebels.com: What's one new thing you tried during the quarantine or something you learned now to do?

Jacklyn: I learned how to sew masks, and I gave them to people that were in need.

UNLVRebels.com: Favorite TV show you binge watched?

Jacklyn: The Office is by far my favorite show.

UNLVRebels.com: Cooked anything?

Jacklyn: Yes a lot. Mostly baking .. lemon bars, two- tier cakes, brownies, cookies,  macaroons, and ice cream. And for meals, I've made pizza, gnocchi, soup, steak and schnitzel.

UNLVRebels.com: What do you miss the most about being away from UNLV and your teammates?

Jacklyn: I miss swimming and hanging out with all my new friends. I like to just go on adventures in new places and I miss them going with me.

UNLVRebels.com: What are you most looking forward to when you come back to campus?

Jacklyn: I'm looking forward to swimming and starting a new year and that I don't have to live in the dorms anymore so that will be a lot of fun.
