COLORADO SPRINGS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team suffered another tough loss in conference play, dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker in double overtime at Air Force (5-4-1, 2-1-0) Friday night.
In a wild game that featured seven impressive goals, the Rebels took an early lead then twice overcame deficits to force the extra period, but a perfectly placed boot by Air Force's Mia Otera from 25 yards out - her third score of the night - ended the game abruptly in the 105th minute.
With the loss, UNLV moves to 7-5 overall and 0-3 in the Mountain West.
Junior
Lourdes Bosch got the scoring started in the fifth minute when she took a pass from fellow junior
Marcella Brooks just past midfield, dribbled it up the middle, turned on the jets to beat the defender and launched a beautifully placed ball from 25 yards out into the upper left corner for a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Air Force tied it up at one, then took the lead in the 15th minute on Otera's first goal. Four minutes later, Bosch again was putting pressure on the AF back line and drew a penalty in the box. Redshirt junior
Taylie Liddell nailed the penalty kick with ease and it was all tied up at two.
Just over 12 minutes into the second half, Otera's second goal gave Air Force the 3-2 lead. It stayed that way until the 76th minute, when Brooks used a nifty cutback on the right side of the field and slipped the ball inside the right post from 22 yards out for the late equalizer.
After a scoreless first overtime, Brooks almost ended the game on another beauty that narrowly missed just before Otera ended the game.
Overall, UNLV out-shot Air Force 19-12, marking a second straight game the Rebels held the advantage in that category but couldn't come away with the victory.
The Rebels will finish out the weekend in Colorado Springs with a Sunday match against Colorado College. Kick off is set for 12:30 p.m. PT/1:30 MT.
