Rebels Suffer Five-Set Setback At Utah State

Mariena Hayden had a match-high 19 kills Thursday night but UNLV's five-match win streak ends.

LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team lost at Utah State in five sets by scores of 24-26, 27-25, 16-25, 25-17, 12-15 Thursday night, ending its five-match win streak.

The Rebels (14-4, 5-2) were led by fifth-year senior Mariena Hayden's 19 kills. She had only three errors, hitting a team-high .390 for the match. Senior Milica Tasic contributed 14 kills and hit .303. Senior Lauryn Burt and sophomore Arien Fafard had 19 and 18 assists, respectively, while sophomore Jordyn Freeman had a match-high eight blocks and junior Paris Oliveira recorded a team-high eight digs.


Utah State (13-5, 5-2) was led by Tatum Stall's 18 kills, Kalena Vaivai's 34 assists and Abby Peterson's 18 digs.

UNLV outhit the Aggies .289 to .265 for the match, however Utah State led in kills (70-54), assists (66-47) and digs (46-34).

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will remain on the road this weekend, traveling to Boise, Idaho, to face Boise State on Saturday, October 16 at 11 a.m. PT. NEWS & NOTES:

  • Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career service aces (305; 189 ahead of second place) and kills (1,690). She is No. 4 in career digs with 1,265.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw the Rebels win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

  • Also returning to the squad were Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

  • For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released in August. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
