Rebels Blank Cowgirls 1-0 In Wyoming

Jules Dominguez scores in the 11th minute, Rebels notch fifth shutout of the season

LARAMIE, WY (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team kept the momentum from its big win over New Mexico going in Laramie on Friday, blanking Wyoming 1-0 for a second straight Mountain West victory. The Rebels scored early, then held off the Cowgirl offense for the fifth shutout of the season.

UNLV improved to 10-6 overall and 3-4 in Mountain West play.

The Rebels put the pressure on the home team right out of the gate and it paid off early when the Cowgirl defense tried to clear the ball out of the box and it went right to the waiting foot of redshirt junior Jules Dominguez. The midfielder trapped the ball cleanly and took one big swing, sending it perfectly past the near post for the score from 25 yards out in the 11th minute. Dominguez had a team-high three shots on the day, while the goal was her second in 2021.

The score would be all they would need as the defense clamped down and the offense continued to dominate for much of the game. For the fifth time in seven Mountain West games, UNLV out-shot its opponent, topping the Cowgirls 17-8 in that category, including 9-2 in shots on goal. The Rebels also drew 10 corner kicks to three for Wyoming and forced the Cowgirl keeper to make eight saves or the margin could have been larger.

Redshirt freshman Riley Lieback, making her fourth straight start in the net, collected two saves with the UNLV defense holding its opponents to single digits in shots for the third consecutive contest.

UNLV will make the short trip from Laramie to Fort Collins for its Sunday match against Colorado State, who currently sits in a tie for third in the league standings at 4-3-0. With four matches remaining, every game carries extra significance as the Rebels fight to be in the top six slots in the standings in order to qualify for the Mountain West tournament. Sunday's match will kick off at Noon PT/1 p.m. MT and be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network.
