Rebels Kick Off Senior Weekend With Big Win Over San Jose State

UNLV wins 1-0 at home Friday night to stay in the hunt for a Mountain West Tournament berth

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team started senior weekend at home exactly how it needed to as the Rebels shut out San Jose State 1-0 Friday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The Rebels scored just before halftime on junior Lourdes Bosch's team-leading sixth goal of the season, then the defense clamped down in the second half for the sixth shutout of the year.

UNLV improved to 11-7 overall and 4-5 in Mountain West play, but most importantly picked up three points in the Mountain West standings to move into seventh place and just one point out of sixth place. The top six teams qualify for the Mountain West Tournament, which will take place in Boise State the first week of November. With two games remaining, the Rebels have the opportunity to move into a berth position as long as they can earn points in the final matches.

The two squads played an evenly matched first half, each recording seven shots, but it was the Scarlet and Gray who broke through with what proved to be the game winner just before halftime. In the 39th minute, junior Lourdes Bosch, who leads the team in both goals (6) and points (15), drew a Spartan yellow card just outside the 18-yard box directly in front of the goal. For a second consecutive game, Bosch hit the free kick perfectly and the ball sailed past the keeper into the back of the net for the lone goal of the match.

The Rebels came out after the break fired up and took control, out-shooting SJSU 7-1 in the second half and allowing virtually no scoring opportunities for a second shutout in the last three games. The UNLV defense got a big boost as super senior Samantha Bailley - a 2021 spring Second Team All-Conference selection - returned after missing the last seven games with an injury.

UNLV's offense, meanwhile, out-shot its opponent for the seventh time in nine Mountain West games, proving how close the Rebels were to coming up with the win in the three overtime heartbreakers during league play.

The Scarlet and Gray seemed to be clicking at the right time, which will be huge as they host first-place Fresno State on Senior Day Sunday before wrapping up the regular season in the Silver State Series showdown against UNR on the turf field at McKay Stadium in Reno on Thursday night.

Sunday's kickoff is set for 1 p.m. with the Senior Day Celebration taking place prior to the match.
