LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Junior
Chilo Sanchez delivered the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field to send UNLV men's soccer to a 2-1 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley. The win ended the Rebels' (7-10, 3-7) four-game skid entering the contest.
A Cimarron-Memorial High School product, Sanchez played the role of hometown hero for the Rebels as he received junior
Hayden Prasad's pass from the right side and snuck the ball past UTRGV's (7-8, 4-5) defense and goalkeeper. The Scarlet and Gray's go-ahead score handed the UNLV a one-goal lead for the first time since it led 1-0 in the 13th minute on senior
Aedon Kyra's team-leading eighth score this year that followed senior
Marco Gonzalez's team-best ninth assist.
Despite allowing an early goal in the first half, the Vaqueros changed the tune in the second half and scored the 1-1 equalizer within the first 13 minutes after the break. Following their 58th-minute goal, UTRGV kept things close for the next 24 minutes before the Rebels broke the contest open.
Anchoring UNLV's defense, junior goalkeeper
Miguel Duenas Jr. made a career-high seven saves to pick up his third win of the season in the net.
UNLV will return to action at Peter Johann Memorial Field for Senior Day when it faces Dixie State Saturday at 7 p.m. PT in the regular season finale. There will also be a tailgate hosted by the UNLV Soccer Foundation at 5 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at UNLVTickets.com.
