Rebels Win Fourth Straight With Sweep At San Diego State

Mariena Hayden had a match-high 12 kills Tuesday night as UNLV took sole possession of first place in the Mountain West.

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team won its fourth straight match with a 3-0 victory at San Diego State Tuesday night at Peterson Gym.

With the 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 win, the Rebels (13-3, 4-1) are currently in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West, and have won 11 of their last 12 matches.

Fifth-year senior outside hitter Mariena Hayden had a match-high 12 kills with only two errors to hit .312, also adding eight digs and a season-high five blocks. Senior setter Lauryn Burt recorded 16 assists, while junior outside hitter Shelby Capllonch had 13 digs and sophomore middle blocker Jordyn Freeman tallied a match-high six blocks.


SDSU (5-12, 2-3) recorded 10 more kills than UNLV (42-32), but the Rebels outhit the Aztecs .247 to .148 and had seven more service aces (9-2). UNLV also recorded 14 total blocks to SDSU's four. The match had 30 ties and 16 lead changes throughout.

SDSU was led by Victoria O'Sullivan's 11 kills, Noa Miller's 21 assists and Natalie Smith's 15 digs. Miller added 12 digs for a double-double.


NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will return home to the Cox Pavilion to host Fresno State on Saturday, October 9 at 1 p.m. It will be Dig for the Cure Day as the Rebels help to raise awareness for cancer research. Pink rally towels will be given to fans while supplies last.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • UNLV has now won 42 of its last 48 matches dating back to 2019.

  • Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career service aces (304; 188 ahead of second place) and kills (1,658). She is No. 4 in career digs with 1,250.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw the Rebels win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

  • Also returning to the squad were Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

  • For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released in August. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
