Rebels Win Fifth In A Row With Second Straight Sweep

Mariena Hayden had a match-high 13 kills Saturday afternoon in home victory against Fresno State.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team won its fifth straight match and second in a row in 3-0 fashion on Saturday afternoon vs. Fresno State at Cox Pavilion.

With the 25-13, 25-19, 25-23 victory, the Rebels (14-3, 5-1) are in a tie for first place in the Mountain West, and have won 12 of their last 13 matches.

Fifth-year senior outside hitter Mariena Hayden had a match-high 13 kills and hit .308, while sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos had a season-high-tying nine kills to hit .400 and freshman middle blocker Chlose Thomas had five kills with no errors to hit .625.

Senior setter Lauryn Burt and sophomore setter Arien Fafard had 15 and 13 assists, respectively, and sophomore middle blocker Jordyn Freeman had a match-high five total blocks. Junior outside hitter Shelby Capllonch contributed a match-high 11 digs.


Fresno State (7-7, 3-3) was led by Amaria Kelley's nine kills, hitting .368, Mikayla Weiss' 13 assists and Desiree Sukhov's six digs.

UNLV outhit the Bulldogs .352 to 191 for the match, recording more kills (42-29), assists (31-23) and digs (38-28). There were a total of 24 ties and 11 lead changes throughout the match.


NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will be on the road next week at Utah State on Thursday, October 14 and at Boise State on Saturday, October 16.   • UNLV has now won 43 of its last 49 matches dating back to 2019.

  • Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career service aces (305; 189 ahead of second place) and kills (1,671). She is No. 4 in career digs with 1,258.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw the Rebels win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

  • Also returning to the squad were Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

  • For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released in August. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
