Rebels Defeat Air Force On The Road For Third Win In A Row

Mariena Hayden recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs to lead UNLV to its fourth victory in its last five matches.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team defeated Air Force Saturday afternoon in four sets (27-25, 23-25, 25-19, 27-25) at Falcon Court at East Gym for its third straight win and fourth in its last five matches.

Fifth-year senior Mariena Hayden led UNLV (19-8, 10-6 MW) as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a match-high 20 kills and 11 digs, hitting .350 and was responsible for a match-high 23.5 points. Sophomore Jordyn Freeman had season highs of 10 blocks, nine kills and 14.5 points, hitting a match-high .692 (no hitting errors), and senior Lauryn Burt was one dig shy of a double-double with 25 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Arien Fafard contributed 19 assists and freshman Isha Knight had a match- and season-high 12 digs.

Air Force (7-19, 4-12 MW) was led by Aaryn Scires' 14 kills, Caroline Reinkensmeyer's 31 assists and Madison Felker's 13 digs.

UNLV outhit the Falcons .265 to .184 for the match, and turned in 15 total blocks to AFA's eight. The match was a close one with 52 total tie scores and 22 lead changes throughout. Air Force led 25-24 in both the first and fourth sets, however UNLV finished each on a 3-0 run.

UNLV swept the regular-season series with Air Force as the Rebels also won 3-1 at home against the Falcons on Sept. 30.


NEXT FOR UNLV: The Rebels will return home to Cox Pavilion for their two final regular-season matches of the year: vs. San Jose State on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. (Disney Day) and UNR on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. (Senior Night). The Mountain West Championship tournament will also be played at the Cox Pavilion, Nov. 24-26.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career kills (1,863) and service aces (335; 219 ahead of second place). She is No. 3 in career digs with 1,353.

  • Dating back to 2019, UNLV has gone 48-11 in its last 59 matches.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw it win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.
