KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UNLVRebels.com) - Led by a school record in the men's 400 medley relay, the UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for eight top-10 finishes and three heat wins Thursday to open the Tennessee Invitational at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
*In the day's last event, UNLV's 400 medley relay 'A' squad of junior
Panos Bolanos, freshman
Adnan Beji, sophomore
George Ratiu and senior
Reece Hemmens combined for a program record of 3:08.46 to take third place - only behind Alabama in first and Virginia in second. Their mark broke the previous school record of 3:08.83 set in 2014 by former Rebel swimmers Henrique Machado, David Szele, Dillon Virva and Samuel Lameynardie.
*Junior Chris Mykkanen paced all Rebels on the day with a third place finish in the 500 free, improving upon his previous NCAA 'B' cut with a season-best time of 4:19.62.
*Finishing within two spots of Mykkanen in the 500 free, freshman
Andrew Navarro also swam a 'B' cut time (4:21.36) to add fifth-place finish for the Rebels in the event. The Scarlet and Gray newcomer's mark also propelled him into eighth all-time in the UNLV record book.
*In the 200 IM, junior
Panos Bolanos finished eighth overall (1:47.35) in the finals on a day in which he also logged the Rebels' fifth fastest time (1:47.26) Â in program history during prelims.
*Freshman
Dominik Bujak tacked on UNLV's fourth top-10 finish in the 200 IM, swimming a time of 1:47.18 to place second in the 'B' final and 10th overall. Bujak's time in the finals lifted him past Bolanos' prelims mark to take over the fourth spot on the Rebels' all-time record chart.
*Competing in the 200 IM 'D' final, sophomore
McKay Mickelson and senior
Jack Binder provided a 1-2 Rebel finish. Mickelson won the heat (1:49.72) and Binder followed close behind in second (1:50.05), as they finished 25th and 26th overall, respectively.
*Moving to the 50 free, Hemmens replicated his prelims NCAA 'B' cut time of 19.86 in the 'A' final to land in eighth place and headline UNLV's pair of top-10 overall finishes in the event.
*Rounding out the Rebels' top-10 individual finishes, sophomore
George Ratiu also chimed in with an NCAA 'B' time of 19.69 to win the 'B' final and finish ninth overall in the 50 free. Subsequently, Ratiu's time moved him into ninth all-time in program history.
*In the 200 free relay, the Rebels' 'A' quartet of Ratiu, senior
Richard Szilagyi, junior
Steven Butler and Hemmens added a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:18.38.
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
*Senior
Kristina Schneider captured another UNLV heat victory in the 'D' final of the 50 free, clocking a season-best time of 22.78. It was her first sub-23 second mark in the event this season and came within two-hundredths of a NCAA 'B' qualifying mark.
