LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team wrapped up its fourth annual Rebel Beach Invitational at Spanish Trail Golf Club Tuesday, finishing in seventh after starting the day in 10th. The Rebels shot a three-round score of 38-over 902 as a team after a second round 8-over and a final round 15-over.
Sophomore
Elina Saksa was the highest Rebel finisher as she ended the tournament in a tie for 10th at 6-over 222 after a final round 72 that included an eagle on her second to last hole. Freshman
Madeleine Laux, making her Rebel debut this week, finished two shots behind Saksa in a tie for 15th at 8-over 224, with sophomore
Aliyah Williams and freshman
Gracie Olkowski, playing as an individual, both tying for 23rd at 11-over 227. Junior
Veronica Joels ended Tuesday in a tie for 33rd at 13-over 229, while senior Luka van der Merwe tied for 64th at 24-over 240 and sophomore
Dana Puyol tied for 69th at 27-over 243.
Tulsa entered the day in a tie for third and shot up to the top of the leaderboard by round's end to edge out Fresno State, winning the tournament by three strokes at 23-over 887. Fresno State shot a 26-over 890 as a team to take second, followed by Gonzaga in third at 29-over 893, Iowa in fourth in 31-over at 895 and New Mexico rounding out the top five at 32-over 896.
Individually, Fresno State's Brigitte Thibault shot back-to-back 70s in rounds two and three to take medalist honors by four strokes at 4-under 212. Iowa's Lea Zeilter jumped up to second at even 216 after her second-round 66 was a tournament-low. Tulsa's Lily Thomas and Lorena Tseng finished third and fourth, respectively, at 1-over 217 and 2-over 218 to help the Golden Hurricane to the team win.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels won't have a long break as they will head to Seal Beach, California, for Long Beach State's Gold Rush tournament, Monday, February 22 and Tuesday, February 23.
