Rebels Shut Out San Jose State 3-0 Behind Harpring Hat Trick

UNLV freshman forward Nailah Harpring collects the hat trick, defensive back line turns in strong showing for third shutout of season

SAN JOSE, CA (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's soccer team finished out the weekend in Northern California with an impressive performance at San Jose State Sunday, beating the Spartans 3-0 to move to 2-1-1 on the season.

The Rebels' victory was propelled by standout performances from freshman forward Nailah Harpring and the UNLV defensive back line. Harpring, who scored her first career goal and recorded her first career assist in Friday's game at Fresno State, netted all three UNLV goals Sunday for the hat trick, while the UNLV defense limited the Spartans to just two shots total - only one on goal - in the entire 90 minutes for its third shutout of the year.

Harpring's hat trick is just the sixth in UNLV women's soccer history and the first since former Rebel All-American Lily Sender scored three at UNR on October 28, 2016. The Broomfield, Colorado, was responsible for all five UNLV goals (four goals, one assist) in the two road matches on the weekend.

The UNLV defense and starting keeper Emberly Sevilla quickly put Friday's 3-2 loss behind them, suffocating the Spartan offense in a game UNLV controlled from kickoff. Just four games into the season, the Rebels are already one shutout shy of matching the four they had during the entire 2019 season (prior to the arrival of first-year head coach Jenny Ruiz-Williams).

Overall it was a complete team performance as the midfield stayed composed and organized, fueling the opportunities for the Rebels up front.

For the game, UNLV out-shot SJSU 19-2, with Harpring tallying five shots and redshirt sophomore Izzy Perez and redshirt senior Ariana Reyes recording three apiece.

UP NEXT: UNLV will be back on the road next weekend, taking on San Diego State Saturday, March 20 at 7 p.m. The Aztecs sit just ahead of the third-place Rebels in the West Division standings at 3-1 through the first two weekends.
