COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (8-7, 6-6 MW) was unable to hold onto a late lead against the Air Force Falcons (10-8, 4-5 MW) at Falcon Field Sunday. The Rebels broke open a 4-all tie with six runs over the seventh and eighth innings only to see the host Falcons rally with seven unanswered en route to a walk-off, 11-10 victory and sweep of the Mountain West series.
The Rebels could not put enough distance between themselves and the Falcons throughout the contest, as any lead was matched. UNLV led 1-0 and 4-1 after their first- and second-inning at-bats; however, Air Force answered with a run in the first and three more in the fourth to draw even on both occasions.
The Scarlet & Gray pulled ahead, 5-4, in the seventh off a sac fly from
Myles Denson, who added an RBI single in the Rebels' five-run eighth. Denson's base hit followed run-scoring hits from
Diego Alarcon (single) and
Eric Bigani (double), and preceded an RBI single from
Austin Kryszczuk.
The Falcons started their comeback in the eighth, with an RBI triple from Tommy Gillman, and completed it in the ninth with three more extra-base hits – a three-run home run from Gabrial Garcia, an RBI double from Brayden Altorfer and a two-run double from Cayden Zimmerman for the win.
UNLV had seven players record multi-hit outings, led by four hits from
Brendan Brooks and three more from Kryszczuk, who topped the squad with three RBI. Bigani and Denson had identical lines with two hits, two RBI and two runs.
Austin Pfeifer brought home two RBI and scored a run off a second-inning home run.
Noah Beal got the start for the Rebels and went 4.2 innings on the mound, striking out three against four runs off eight hits and two walks.
Noah Mattera followed in relief, going 3.1 innings with three strikeouts, but surrendered four runs off five hits and one walk. Larry Quaney (0-1) took the loss after entering in the ninth and getting two outs; however, he gave up three runs off four hits and one walk.
Air Force used a total of six pitchers in the contest, as Doyle Gehring got the start and a no-decision after throwing the first 3.0 innings. Zach Argo (1-2) picked up the win by virtue of being the final Falcon on the mound, throwing a scoreless ninth with one strikeout and one hit.
