Rebels Take Two From Bulldogs

UNLV baseball swept Friday’s twin bill, winning 9-5 in game one and 10-9 in extras in game two.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (10-7, 8-6 MW) jumped back in the win column twice Friday, recording a doubleheader sweep of the Fresno State Bulldogs (7-12, 4-7 MW) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels won game one by a four-run margin, 9-5; however, they had to rally for a 10-9, come-from-behind victory in extra innings in game two.

The Rebels hit .385 on the day with 30 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases with four doubles, three triples and three home runs. The hit haul helped the team amass a .628 slugging percentage and with the addition of 12 walks, they owned a .473 on-base percentage. Seven different batters recorded at least two hits on the day and six of those had .300 or better batting averages.

Individually, Eric Bigani paced the team with a .700 batting average, seven hits, four RBI and three runs. Edarian Williams batted .556 with five hits, three RBI and two runs. Both Diego Alarcon and Jack-Thomas Wold had four hits and batted .444 and .400, respectively, as the former had three RBI and three runs to the latter's two RBI and four runs.

GAME ONE RECAP: In the opening tilt, UNLV jumped out to an eight-run lead, 8-0, through three innings of play. Bigani and Williams got the scoring started with back-to-back RBI triples in the first inning. The lead grew to 3-0 in the second when James Gamble scored from first base when Fresno State starter Jake Dixon (2-2) misfired on a pickoff attempt at first and first baseman Zach Presno errantly threw across the diamond in a continuation of the play. The lead grew to eight with a three-run third, as Alarcon led off with a homer and then Williams and Pfeifer upped the lead with an RBI single and a two-run triple.

The Bulldogs got their offense going in the fourth, starting a stretch of five unanswered runs. They score three unearned tallies in the fourth with help from a Rebel fielding error, and then got one in the fifth off a solo homer and one more in the seventh off an RBI double.

Alarcon added an insurance score in the eighth with an RBI double.

UNLV's Bradley Spooner (2-2) earned the win in 6.2 innings of work, striking out eight against two earned runs (five total) off six. Troy Balko picked up the save in 2.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts, one hit and one walk. Dixon, on the other hand, was handed the loss after allowing six earned runs (eight total) off 11 hits in 5.0 innings.

GAME TWO RECAP: Fresno State used the long ball for the majority of its offensive output in game two, hitting a total of five home runs in the contest. The Bulldogs first four runs and six of the nine in the game were attributed to homers. They got back-to-back homers in the first from Nate Thimjon and Andrew Kachel as well as a solo shot in the second off UNLV starter Josh Sharman. They went off script in the fifth, scoring off a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly, thus, bumping the lead to 6-1 through 4.5 innings. UNLV scored two if its own in the home half of the fifth, getting a two-run home run from Bigani.

Fresno State tacked on a would-be insurance run in the eighth, getting a solo homer from Thimjon; however, UNLV came alive in the ninth scoring four runs off four hits to tie the affair at 7-all. Wold started the scoring with a two-run homer and was followed by an RBI double from Kryszczuk and a game-tying, bases-loaded walk to Jordan Andrade.

The Bulldogs pulled back ahead in the 10th, getting a solo homer from EJ Andrews and a sac fly from Ryan Higgins. The two-run cushion was short-lived, as the Rebels were able to get three RBI singles from Alarcon, Bigani and Kryszczuk for the win.

UNLV's Alex Tisminezky (1-2) was handed the win after recording the final two outs in the top of the 10th. Fresno State's Robbie Peters (1-2) was on the hook for the loss, giving up three earned (four total) off seven hits in one inning of relief.

NOTES:
-Williams extended his team-best hit and reached-base streaks to 10 games, while Myles Denson upped his to nine and 10, respectively.

-With 14 and 16 hits in games' one and two, respectively, UNLV has recorded double-figure hit totals in four straight contests and nine of its last 10.
-The 10 RBI and 10 runs in game two marks the fifth instance that UNLV has reached double digits in both figures.

-Bigani and Kryszczuk are tied for the team lead in multiple-RBI games, as both had two RBI in game two to put them at five each on the year.
