UNLV football returned to Rebel Park for the first time since its first spring scrimmage on Tuesday and the media got to pick the brain of young quarterback
Doug Brumfield (Inglewood, CA/Serra HS).
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound signal-caller got into two games as a true freshman last fall - even rushing in for his first touchdown vs. Wyoming at Allegiant -- and is in the mix for a much bigger role in 2021.
The long lefty, who changed jersey numbers from 17 to 2 this year, said he and the entire team are feeling much more comfortable now that they're getting a spring practice period under head coach
Marcus Arroyo and staff.
"I thought the scrimmage was a big improvement for the offense. We made a lot of steps forward Saturday. Reads, progressions, blocking schemes, routes -- I felt like we were all on the same page.
What has Arroyo been preaching to him this spring?
"Just developing my mind as a quarterback and learning how to be a passer and not just a thrower. How to throw certain balls, how to recognize coverages and having intent with every play. I feel a lot more confident, especially with reading coverages, because our scout team gives us really good looks out there, a lot of different looks that we might see against numerous teams that we play. It really helps us improve.
And what will it take for a young quarterback to become a team leader behind center?
"I feel like the physical part -- just leading by example. It's pretty natural for me just to go out there and play hard with my teammates but I've been working on being more vocal. Being a young guy but trying to be more comfortable with being vocal to all the guys."
