LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (12-7) extended its season-best win streak to four games with an 8-4 win over the Pacific Tigers (8-18) in come-from-behind fashion at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Thursday. The Rebels used a six-run outburst in the seventh to erase a two-run deficit, 4-2, and stake themselves to a four-run advantage.
During this current successful stretch, the Scarlet & Gray has had to rally late in each of the last three victories. In this past weekend's Mountain West series against Fresno State, the Rebels fell behind by four, 7-3, through 7.5 innings in game two of Friday's doubleheader – winning 10-9 in 10 innings, and trailed by two runs, 3-1, after 6.5 frames in Saturday's finale – winning 9-6.
UNLV turned things around in the seventh with six runs off five hits and help from a pair of miscues by Pacific defensively. With one out, Tigers' third baseman Alex LeForestier misplayed an infield popup by
James Gamble that would have led to the second out of the inning. Pacific reliever Marvcus Guarin (0-1) was able to rebound with a strikeout, but was unsuccessful the remainder of the frame, as the next four batters he faced recorded a hit and RBI in the process, and that included a two-run home run by
Edarian Williams. Moments after the visitors went to the bullpen and brought in Zach Patterson,
Myles Denson connected for a homer on the first pitch he saw to make it back-to-back dingers for UNLV.
The Tigers, who just snapped a 10-game skid Wednesday with a 14-10 victory on the road against Fresno State, took a 3-0 lead after plating a run in the first, third and fifth innings.
UNLV was unable to push across any runs over the first four frames despite recording six hits and leaving one runner on base in each inning; however, things turned in the fifth when
Diego Alarcon and
Jack-Thomas Wold produced with back-to-back, run-scoring hits – a double and single – with two outs.
Pacific was able to get one run back in the sixth off a solo homer from Las Vegas native Joe Fitzhugh, a former teammate of UNLV's
Austin Pfeifer and
Brad Stone at Arbor View High School.
Josh Sharman got the start for UNLV and went 5.1 innings on the mound, striking out three against four runs off six hits and one walk.
Jimmy Gamboa (3-1) came on in relief in the sixth and only allowed one hit in his short stint on the mound.
Troy Balko threw the final 2.0 innings with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.
Pacific's Grant Stevens struck out five in his start, going 6.0 innings and giving up two runs off nine hits. Guarin was saddled with the loss after allowing five unearned runs off four hits in 0.2 innings of relief. Zach Patterson finished out the game for the Tigers, permitting one run off two hits and one walk.
