Rebels Hold On For Win Over Tigers

UNLV baseball defeated Pacific, 3-2, Friday to extend its win streak to five games.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (13-7) rallied for a 3-2 win over the Pacific Tigers (8-19), scoring the game-tying and -winning runs over the sixth and seventh innings Friday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The victory did not come without a bit of drama, as the Tigers were able to get a runner to third in the ninth only to see Rebel right fielder Rylan Charles make a diving catch for the third out to preserve the win.

The Scarlet & Gray claimed a series win with Friday's triumph as well as extended its season-best win streak to five games. Delving deeper, the last four victories in this current run were in come-from-behind fashion, as the Rebels scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning or later.

Pacific found itself with the potentially game-tying run 90 feet away from home in the ninth after Ben Nemivant led off the frame with a single and moved base to base off a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. With two outs, Bryce Kirk stepped into the batter's box and swung at the first pitch he saw from Rebel reliever Ty Pohlmann and hit the offering to shallow right that Charles chased down.

UNLV opened the scoring in the third, getting a two-out RBI single from Jack-Thomas Wold off Pacific starter Hayden Pearce (1-5). The Rebel lead lasted until the Tigers pushed two across in the fifth, producing a pair of runs off three straight singles and a double play.

The Rebels drew even in the sixth off a two-out RBI single from Jordan Andrade and reclaimed the lead an inning later off a one-out RBI single from Austin Kryszczuk, who had three hits in the affair.

UNLV starter Bradley Spooner (3-2) picked up the win in 7.0 innings of work, striking out six against two runs, eight hits and one walk. Ty Pohlmann entered the contest in the eighth and threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit, to earn the save (1).

Pearce was saddled with the loss after tossing the initial 7.0 innings for the Tigers. He struck out five, but allowed three runs (one earned) off nine hits and one walk. Hunter Schilperoort threw the final 1.0 inning, with one strikeout and one hit.

NOTES:
-Denson extended his team-best reached base streak to 13 games, and his hit streak to 12 games Friday. Since game one of the San Diego State series on March 13, he is batting .386 (17-for-44) with five extra-base hits (three home runs and two doubles), 11 runs and seven RBI.
-With 10 hits Friday, UNLV has recorded double-figure hit totals in seven straight contests and 12 of its last 13.

UP NEXT: UNLV and Pacific return to Wilson Stadium Saturday for game three of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 am.
