Rebels Come Up Short In Reno

UNLV falls to the Wolfpack 2-1 on a late goal at Mackay Stadium Friday night

RENO, NV (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's soccer team was unable to complete the season sweep of in-state rival UNR, falling to the Wolfpack 2-1 Friday night in Reno. The Rebels and the Wolfpack will split the three points for women's soccer in the Silver State Series, the annual all-encompassing competition between the two schools presented by IBEW and Nevada Donor Network. UNLV won the first matchup of the season 1-0 on March 7 in Las Vegas.

UNLV moves to 5-3-1 on the year with the loss snapping a three-game winning streak for the Rebels. It also marks the first loss to UNR since 2007, ending an 11-game unbeaten streak against the Wolfpack. With the result, San Diego State clinches the West Division and will face New Mexico on April 17 for the Mountain West's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Playing on the turf field at UNR's football stadium, the Wolfpack struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. UNLV didn't panic and continued to create chances up front, drawing a free kick in the 41st minute from 30 yards out. Senior Citlalli Alonso sent the ball into a waiting line of Rebels just inside the 18-yard box and sophomore Hevani Haunga found the ball with her body and was able to slip it past the UNR keeper, tying it up at one with three and a half minutes remaining in the half. Haunga, who scored the game winner last weekend in overtime against the Aztecs last Saturday night, has goals in back-to-back games after scoring one career goal prior to 2021.

The 1-1 stalemate continued late into the second half until UNR found the back of the net with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game. UNLV had a handful of dangerous chances to tie it over the final 10 minutes, but the Wolfpack keeper came up with a pair of big saves to keep the home team ahead for good.

Despite the defeat, UNLV out-shot UNR 11-6 overall - the seventh time in nine games the Rebels bested their opponent in that category. Junior keeper Emberly Sevilla made her ninth start and allowed one goal before giving way to senior Elly Reynada late in the first half. Reynada stayed in the net for the remainder of the match.

UP NEXT: With SDSU clinching the West Division Friday night, Sunday's match at Boise State will be the Rebels' final game of the 2021 spring season. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. PT in Boise.
