LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team, once again, proved that there is no place like home Saturday with its doubleheader sweep of the San Diego State Aztecs in Mountain West play at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels, who have gone 16-3 at home this season, won each contest of the twin bill in walk-off fashion, albeit in differing methods, as game one was decided in the seventh inning via run rule, 14-4, while game two, 11-10, was decided by a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded.
With the wins, the Scarlet & Gray improves to 18-11 on the year and 13-10 in the MW. The Aztecs, on the other hand, saw their record move to 25-14 overall and 17-12 in the conference.
The Rebels were paced offensively by
Jack-Thomas Wold who batted .750 with seven hits, five of which went for extra bases (three doubles and two home runs) and resulted in a 1.455 slugging percentage. Additionally, he knocked in seven RBI and scored three runs. In game one, he had two hits – both solo homers, two RBI and two runs. In the second contest, he went 5-for-6 with three doubles and one homer, five RBI and one run.
In all, the team hit at an impressive .430 clip (34-for-79) with nine batters registering at least two hits on the day. In addition to Wold's performance, UNLV also got six hits (.600), five runs and three RBI from
Edarian Williams and five hits (.556), four runs and one RBI from
Myles Denson.
GAME ONE RECAP: The Rebels fell behind by three runs, 3-0, due some poor defensive play following the Aztecs' first at-bat, but answered back in a big way scoring 10 straight over the second through fifth innings. Once, SDSU was able to muster up one run in the sixth, UNLV countered with one of its own in the sixth and three more to end the game in the seventh.
The Rebels turnaround began with two runs in the second that were a result of a double play and a double from
James Gamble. The team added six in the third, with Wold leading the offensive with a homer and was followed by an RBI double from Kryszczuk, a two-run single from
Rylan Charles, a sac fly from
Diego Alarcon and an Aztec error.
UNLV tacked on one run after another in the fifth and sixth, getting one off a throwing error in the fourth and another solo shot by Wold in the fifth. SDSU shaved a run off its deficit in the sixth only to see the Rebels get it back in the home half off an RBI single by Gamble, and then some in the seventh with a solo homer from
Eric Bigani, an RBI single by Kryszczuk and a fielder's choice RBI from Charles.
Bradley Spooner (5-3) picked up the win in complete-game fashion, throwing all 7.0 innings with four strikeouts against one earned run (four runs), six hits and three walks.
GAME TWO RECAP: The Rebels carried over the momentum from game one into the second tilt, scoring twice in the first and five more times in the second to stake themselves to a six-run lead, 5-1, after two. The Aztecs flipped the game in their favor beginning in the third with four runs that were followed by one more in the fourth and four in the fifth. After a scoreless sixth, UNLV began to chip away with single tallies in the seventh and eighth and then two more in the ninth for the win.
UNLV opened the scoring unconventionally, getting RBI groundouts from Williams and Denson in the first. SDSU got one run back in the second; however, UNLV countered with five of its own with help from a three-run double from Wold and a two-run homer from Williams to push out to the six-run lead, 7-1.
After going four innings without scoring and seeing their six-run lead turn into a three-run deficit, 10-7, the Rebels began their comeback bid in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from
Jason Hare. A defensive miscue allowed UNLV to pull within one, 10-9, in the eighth.
UNLV completed the rally in the ninth with Wold's walk-off, two-run single after the bases were loaded off one-out singles from Hare and Bigani, and a passed ball allowed Alarcon to reach safely after he struck out.
Austin Bryan, who struck out four, improved to 2-0 after throwing 5.0 innings of relief and allowing only one run off four hits and no walks.
NOTES:
-Wold upped his hitting streak and reached-base streak to 15 games apiece. During this stretch, he is hitting .492 (31-for-63) with eight multiple-hit games.
