CAMP PRACTICE NUMBER: 2
DAYS UNTIL KICKOFF: 28
QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Everyone's got their feet under them now. Yesterday the freshmen were practicing on the college level for the first time, which is always a tough adjustment. Today, everyone's got the gist of things and feeling more comfortable."
--Super Senior Tight End Giovanni Fauolo Sr.
BY THE NUMBERS
There are some significant number changes in this year's camp as at least eight returning lettermen are sporting different jerseys from last season. Especially notable -- for the first time UNLV has a number zero on its roster.
In April 2020, the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a rule making jersey number zero legal for college football players to wear while also ruling that no more than two players can share the same number and reaffirming that they must not play the same position or be on the field at the same time. Allowing more than two players with the same number increasingly created confusion for the game officials (and stat crews up in the press box!) while making scouting opponents more difficult. In response to the popularity of single-digit numbers, the committee approved players wearing "0" as a legal number but -- none did last fall for UNLV.
That makes
Ricky Johnson, a 6-1, 170, sophomore defensive back from Houston, Texas, who wore No. 25 last season ... the first Rebel to ever wear zero on the football field.
While zero is not one of them, UNLV currently has 19 double-numbers on its roster -- all of which occur at No. 31 or lower.
Other number changes for 2021:
-Quarterback
Doug Brumfield moved from 17 to 2
-Defensive back
Nohl Williams moved from 16 to 2
-Inside linebacker
Jacoby Windmon moved from 35 to 4
-Defensive lineman
Naki Fahina moved from 42 to 6
-Defensive back
Dominic Brown moved from 2 to 11
-Linebacker
Kue Olotoa moved from 17 to 81
-Wide receiver
Steve Jenkins moved from 84 to 4
