Rebels Tied For Eighth After First Round At Season Opener

UNLV men's golf shoots 6-over-par 294 Friday at Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational hosted by Air Force.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 6-over-par 294 Friday at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which is being hosted by Air Force at the Eisenhower Golf Course (par 72, 7,541 yards). 

UC Davis leads the field by four shots at 9-under 279, while San Jose State is second at 5-under, followed by Denver at 2-under and Wyoming at 1-over. UNR rounds out the top five at the 21-team event. The Rebels are tied for eighth with Utah Valley. 

Denver's Jackson Solem holds the individual lead among those competing in the team competition at 6-under 66. There is a two-way tie for second at 5-under. 

The Rebels were led by fifth-year senior (graduate student) J.J. Gresco and junior George Leigh, who both shot even-par 72 on Friday. There are 105 players competing in the team competition, which is being held on the Blue Course.

The individual-only tournament is being played on the Silver Course and is being led by Vijay Srinivasan at 4-under 68 and Matthew Heitel at 3-under 69 0- both from San Jose State.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will continue play at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational this weekend with the second round Saturday, Sept. 11, and the final round Sunday, Sept. 12.
