Late Goal Lifts Rebels to 2-1 Win At LMU In Non-Conference Finale

Junior Marcella Brooks scores the game-winning goal in the 81st minute

LOS ANGELES, CA (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team won its third straight game Sunday, taking down Loyola Marymount 2-1 on the road in the final non-conference match for the Rebels.

The Scarlet and Gray used a pair of second-half goals, including the game-winner by Marcella Brooks in the 81st minute, to down the Lions on their home field and move to 7-2 on the year. The mark is the best record heading into Mountain West play since the 2017 team went 8-1 during its non-league slate. Since losing the season opener, the Rebels have won seven of their last eight games, with the only loss coming on a golden goal in overtime at Grand Canyon.

After a scoreless first half, UNLV didn't waste any time breaking the tie after the break. Three minutes into the second period, super senior defender Samantha Bailley sent a beauty of a cross into the box directly at a waiting Lourdes Bosch. Bosch, left wide open in front of the net, used a nifty header to push the ball past the LMU keeper for the 1-0 lead.

The score remained there until the 80th minute, when LMU evened the game at one all. The Rebels didn't panic though and just a minute later, Brooks put UNLV right back on top for good. After a LMU defender cleared the ball right to Brooks' right food, the junior took on touch to the right from 25 yards out and couldn't have struck it any better as the ball sailed just under the crossbar and out of the keeper's reach for what proved to be the game winner.

Overall, UNLV dominated on the offensive side of the ball, out-shooting the Lions 16-8. Redshirt freshman Taylor Book made her third straight start in goal an collected four saves while the Rebels back line was stout as it has been all season.

The Rebels open Mountain West play at home next weekend, hosting Boise State and Utah State on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Broncos and Aggies have each had strong non-league results as well, with BSU at 6-2 and USU at 7-1-1. Friday's game kicks off at 7 p.m. while Sunday's match will begin at 1 p.m.
