Rebels Defeated At San Jose State In Mountain West Opener

UNLV's seven-match win streak snapped.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball team had its seven-match win streak snapped Thursday night as it was defeated at San Jose State in its Mountain West opener.

The Rebels (9-3, 0-1) fell in three sets by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-22.

The Spartans (7-4, 1-0), who recorded their third straight win, were led by Amethyst Harper's double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs. Mia Schafer had 32 assists and Sarah Smevog recorded 18 digs.

UNLV fifth-year senior outside hitter Marien Hayden, who became the all-time leader in career kills for the Rebels during the match, and senior outside hitter Milica Tasic each had 11 kills. Sophomore setter Arien Fafard and senior setter Lauryn Burt recorded 15 and 14 assists, respectively and junior outside hitter Shelby Capllonch and junior libero/defensive specialist Paris Oliveira had 13 and 11 digs.

UNLV was outhit .242 to .194 for the match, which included 16 ties and eight lead changes. SJSU also led in kills (44-42), service aces (8-3) and digs (58-51).

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Hayden is No. 1 all-time at UNLV in career service aces (290) and kills (1,609). She is No. 5 in career digs with 1,217.

  • UNLV concluded its Spring 2021 season with a record-breaking campaign that saw the Rebels win the Mountain West title, going undefeated in regular-season play (12-0) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season 13-1 overall.

  • UNLV returned nine letterwinners from last season including All-American and MW Player of the Year Mariena Hayden, and All-MW First Team performer Kate Brennan.

  • Also returning to the squad are Gabrielle Arretche-Ramos, Lauryn Burt, Shelby Capllonch (honorable mention All-MW), Arien Fafard, Jordyn Freeman, Paola Garcia and Paris Oliveira. There are eight newcomers, which include six freshmen and a pair of international student-athletes.

  • UNLV is led by fourth-year head coach Dawn Sullivan, who was honored following the Spring 2021 season with the MW's Coach of the Year award.

  • For the first time in program history, the Rebels were predicted to finish atop the MW volleyball standings by the league's 11 head coaches as the preseason poll was released last month. Hayden was chosen as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
