Rebels Fall to California Baptist in WAC Opener

UNLV received a penalty kick goal in the second half but were overcome by the Lancers' three goals

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's soccer team cut the deficit to one goal in the second half, but ultimately fell to California Baptist, 3-1, in its WAC opener Saturday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. This marks the first home loss this season for the Rebels, who move to 4-4 on the year and 0-1 in WAC play.

After falling behind 2-0 to the Lancers (6-1-1, 1-0 WAC) just over five minutes into the second half, UNLV senior Bailey Leatherman drew a foul in the CBU defensive box and converted the ensuing penalty kick in the 55th minute for the Scarlet and Gray's only score of the night.

UNLV kept up its pressure on the attack through the end of the contest to finish with a 13-12 shot advantage over California Baptist, including a couple threatening shots inside the box by junior Skyler Goo and senior Aedon Kyra late in the second half that CBU goalkeeper Evan Ince ended up making heroic saves on. The Lancers - who also tallied a 29th-minute score in the contest - went on to add an insurance goal in the 88th minute, however, for its third goal to avoid any last-minute rally by the Rebels.

The Rebels will hit the road for a two-game road trip to continue WAC play, starting with a match at Seattle on Friday, October 1.
