Rebels Come Up Short In Overtime At Grand Canyon

UNLV falls to the Lopes 2-1 in double overtime Sunday in Phoenix

PHOENIX (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team used a late goal to force overtime at Grand Canyon Sunday, but couldn't complete the rally as the Lopes scored the golden goal in the second overtime to seal the 2-1 loss for the Rebels. The defeat moved UNLV to 4-2 on the year and ended a four-game winning streak by the Rebels.

Both teams entered Sunday's match at 4-1 and coming off dominant 3-0 performances in their last outings, so it was no surprise when the physical battle unfolded on the pitch at GCU Stadium. A hard-fought first half remained 0-0 until the 35th minute when GCU took the lead on a goal off of a corner kick. The intensity picked up a notch in the second half and in the 66th minute UNLV starting keeper Charlotte Brisley was given a red card and removed from the match, leaving the Rebels with just 10 players on the field the remainder of the game.

That didn't deter UNLV as the team continued to battle for the game-tying goal. In the 80th minute it paid off as junior midfielder Marcella Brooks drew a foul right outside the border of the box. Brooks lined up to take the free kick and launched a perfectly place ball past the GCU defensive wall that slipped just under the crossbar for the score and the game evener.

After the first overtime period went scoreless, the Lopes came through with the game-winning goal in the 104th minute. The loss in overtime was the first for the Rebels in their last four overtime contests and first in overtime under second year head coach Jenny Ruiz-Williams.

The Rebels return home to Peter Johann Memorial Field next weekend, hosting Weber State Friday at 7 p.m. and New Mexico State Sunday at 1 p.m. UNLV has three non-conference games left before opening Mountain West play on Friday, September 24 at home against Boise State.
