Rebel Hopes Dashed in Second Half

San Jose State captures 3-1 victory over UNLV

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The raucous celebration of the Rebels' second-half equalizer was short-lived as San Jose State shouldered through to a 3-1 victory Friday night.

A crowd of 1,243 buzzed inside Peter Johann Memorial Field after enjoying a free tailgate provided by the UNLV Soccer Foundation and celebrating the legacy of former head coach Vince Hart, who passed away in July.

UNLV (1-6-6 overall, 0-3-2 WAC) and San Jose State (6-3-2, 2-0-1) traded shots throughout the first half. The Rebels had the first clean look, but it was the Spartans who lit up the scoreboard first.

From the right channel, Beau Leroux found space between the left post and UNLV goalkeeper Andrew Sway to give San Jose State a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

UNLV found its answer in the 53rd minute when Brophy Howard was fouled inside the penalty box by Eduardo Miranda. Nico Clasen spun the penalty kick over a diving David Sweeney.

SJSU's Anthony Guzman quieted the fans just two minutes late, sneaking a one-on-one chance past Andrew Sway. Guzman then fed Leroux's second goal of the night in the 76th minute to crush the upset hopes of the Rebels.

UNLV returns to its home pitch Sunday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. versus Seattle U. The game will be streamed live on WACInternational.TV.

Single-game tickets are $6 when purchased in advance of game day, $10 at the door and free for kids in high school or younger. Advances purchases can be made at UNLVTickets.com or by calling 702-739-3267.
