LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer team controlled possession for two-thirds of its match against Colorado State.
It was the game's final possession, however, that provided the most fireworks as senior
Kaitlyn Kowalchuk's header with three seconds remaining off a corner by her senior counterpart
Jules Dominguez led the Rebels (3-8-2, 1-2-2) to a 1-1 draw with the Rams (4-3-6, 1-0-4) Thursday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
In the game's final minute, the Scarlet & Gray's three corners during that span culminated with Dominguez getting her own rebound near the CSU goal and sprinting to the corner to get off one last scoring opportunity. Her delivery didn't disappoint as it connected with Kowalchuk, who soared high near the left post and sent the ball off the gloves of the Rams' goalkeeper Maddie Ogden into the right side of the net as time neared expiration.
Despite giving up an early goal to Colorado State in the 10th minute, the Rebels showed determination down to the final whistle which led to a 12-5 shot and a 10-1 corner kick advantage over the Rams in the contest.
The finish provided the icing on the cake on a night in which UNLV's senior
Hevani Haunga and sophomore
Viviana Cera each celebrated their birthdays.
QUOTABLE: "We had two birthdays today, so it's so fitting. We've had a couple games here before like this where everyone just runs onto the field. It feels so magical and these women are going to have a tough time sleeping tonight because of the adrenaline pumping. They deserved this. We worked on [controlling possession] this week, so I'm very proud of this team. Colorado State's very structured, tactical and well coached. But hats off our ladies, they were amazing."
