LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Behind freshman
Cadence Whitley's 88th-minute goal, the UNLV women's soccer team (3-8-3, 1-2-3) earned a 1-1 draw with Wyoming (3-5-5, 2-2-2) Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The point caps an unbeaten weekend at home for the Rebels, who also came away with a point against Colorado State with a late-game score.
Whitley, who scored her second goal of the season, blasted a laser into the right side of the net from the top left of the 18 as senior
Mimi Mendoza touched the ball towards her after senior
Alysa Caso sent a corner into the box.
The Rebels and the Cowgirls finished an even 13-13 on shots and 5-5 in shots on goal, but the Scarlet & Gray's persistence paid off with a pair of scoring chances in the waning moments of the match. On the play prior to Whitley's score, Caso made her way into the box and launched a shot of her own from 15 yards before a sprinting Cowgirl defender deflected it out of bounds for the ensuing successful corner attempt.
In addition to UNLV's offensive aggression, sophomore goalkeeper
Riley Liebsack - who ended the day with four saves - and UNLV's defensive backline held strong for the final 21 minutes of the contest after Wyoming's 70th-minute goal.
QUOTABLE: "When we talk about this team, you can't not mention its spirit of resilience and relentlessness. That's what [these ladies] have shown all weekend. They never stop and never will. Until the last whistle, they'll fight, which makes me extremely proud of this group. They've shown that again today. Now we've got to find a way to put 90 minutes together... The girls are so bought in and hungry and this is going to fuel us for next weekend." -UNLV Head Coach
Jenny Ruiz-Williams
