Young Drops 25 To Halt Hawaii

UNLV leaves Hawaii undefeated after defeating Hawaii 76-66

HONOLULU (UNLVRebels.com) — Desi-Rae Young scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead UNLV to a 76-66 victory at Hawaii Sunday afternoon.

Young made 10 of 12 field goals and counted three steals in the most productive game of her career.

With 7 minutes to play and the score tied 59-59, Young forced Imani Perez into a 3-second lane violation and then buried a turnaround jumper on the other end to ignite a 6-0 scoring run.

It was just one of many game-changing efforts the Mountain West Player of the Year would use to halt Hawaii's momentum.

UNLV made eight of its first 10 field goals and jumped out to a 41-30 lead at halftime. But four straight Hawaii field goals coupled with UNLV's 1-for-5 shooting to start the fourth period allowed the Rainbow Wahine to draw even.

Daejah Phillips scored five unanswered to counter UNLV's run and cut Hawaii's deficit to 3. Young wrestled away an offensive rebound for a second-chance layup and then drew a disqualifying foul on Kallin Spiller.

Kiara Jackson, who scored nine points, drove the lane for a layup to make the score 71-64. Young then forced a steal, body slamming the hardwood as she stretched out to deflect the ball to Jackson, who dished to Justice Ethridge on a 2-on-1 layup.

It was just the second win for the Lady Rebels in their last 10 trips to Honolulu.

Essence Booker scored 17 points. Ethridge added 10.

UNLV scored 46 points in the paint and outrebounded Hawaii 38-29.

Olivia Davies, playing for the first time this season, scored 14 points to lead Hawaii.
