Make It Ten Straight

UNLV outlasts San Diego State to extend its winning streak to double digits

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Make it 10 wins in a row for the Lady Rebels

UNLV (20-4 overall, 12-1 Mountain West) outlasted San Diego State 76-67 Saturday at Cox Pavilion to match its longest winning streak since 2004.

"Our city, our university has needed this for a long time," UNLV head coach Lindy La Rocque said, "It's not just me—it takes a village, great players, great staff. We have seen the crowd grow and grow every game.

"Vegas loves winners, but we're just getting started."

Las Vegas native Essence Booker scored 8 of her game-leading 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Rebels pushed back against every Aztec rally attempt.

UNLV and SDSU went shot-for-shot for nearly 30 minutes. Khylee-Jade Pepe scored her only field goal of the game with 1 ½ minutes left in the third quarter to bring the Aztecs with 2. That's when Booker scored six straight points, including a end-of-period, buzzer-beating layup as UNLV opened a 10-point lead.

"We realize we have something special going on here, which is great. But we realize we really have to keep our heads down and stayed focused if we want to get to where we really want to go."

SDSU's Sophia Ramos scored a team-high 18 points but was limited to just 6 after halftime.

Four Lady Rebels made 3-pointers for a combined 7-for-19 performance from 3-point range. San Diego State hit just two of 15 3-point attempts.

"We don't really scheme to hit the 3," Booker said. "We're coached that if the shot comes naturally and you don't have a second-guess about it, just shoot it."

UNLV's Nneka Obiazor added 15 points off the bench and Desi-Rae Young reached a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

UNLV next hosts Fresno State Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cox Pavilion. UNLV will celebrate its Diversity and Inclusion Night.

STRANGER THINGS: The Lady Rebels have matched their longest winning streak since the 1992-93 squad won 18 straight. The Buffalo Bills had only lost three straight Super Bowls by that point in history.

DEEP RUNS: UNLV's 20-4 overall record is its best since the 2001-02 Lady Rebels (23-8, 9-5) reached 21 victories before suffering a fifth defeat.

STREAK STRUCK: Essence Booker missed her third of five free throw attempts, ending her streak of consecutive makes at a career-high 34. Booker had a streak of 25 consecutive earlier this season and has now made 61 of her last 62 attempts.

LAST 10: As of the end of games Saturday, only nine Division I teams owned a 10-game or better winning streak: UNLV, South Carolina, Stanford, Dayton, IUPUI, Stephen F. Austin, Rhode Island, Princeton and Jackson State.

EIGHT ISN'T ENOUGH: Desi-Rae Young collected 14 points and 13 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.
